Counting/Numeration Up to 10
Since not all children in an elementary Montessori class come from Children's House, it is best to know the following materials that deal with the numbers 1-10. These same materials are found in the Children's House but are presented differently in elementary. They are presented differently because children from different planes of development have different characteristics.
Why focus on 10? Simply because our counting system, the decimal system, is based on 10.
The materials that deal with the numbers 1-10 are divided into two groups. The first group of materials, where the units are joined, include the number rods and the sandpaper digits. The second group of materials, where the units are loose or separate, include the spindle boxes and the cards and counters.
